Update: Milwaukee Sex Offender Legislation
As discussed earlier, GIS is playing an critical part in the debate over sex offender housing legislation in Milwaukee. The debate centered where sex offenders could live and was put on hold until a map could be made. The map is now out. Here is JS Online's version of it (click on it to go the larger version on JS Online):
What the map shows is, quoting from JS Online:Of the city's 15 aldermanic districts, 10 would be off limits to sex offenders whose crimes involve children or violence, the map shows. The other districts combined would have just 1,637 housing units where offenders could live after they are released from prison. The ordinance, sponsored by Aldermen Tony Zielinski and Jim Bohl, would prevent sex offenders from living within 2,000 feet of any school, day care center, park or playground in the city. It would not apply to the current homes of those already out of prison. The Common Council's Public Safety Committee will debate the measure today.
