Update: Milwaukee Sex Offender Legislation

As discussed earlier, GIS is playing an critical part in the debate over sex offender housing legislation in Milwaukee. The debate centered where sex offenders could live and was put on hold until a map could be made. The map is now out. Here is JS Online's version of it (click on it to go the larger version on JS Online):
What the map shows is, quoting from JS Online:
Of the city's 15 aldermanic districts, 10 would be off limits to sex offenders whose crimes involve children or violence, the map shows. The other districts combined would have just 1,637 housing units where offenders could live after they are released from prison.

The ordinance, sponsored by Aldermen Tony Zielinski and Jim Bohl, would prevent sex offenders from living within 2,000 feet of any school, day care center, park or playground in the city. It would not apply to the current homes of those already out of prison. The Common Council's Public Safety Committee will debate the measure today.

Wis. GIO Leaving For Private Sector

Here's the email that went out to WLIA members this afternoon:
Dear WLIA members,

I wanted to let you all know that I will be leaving the GIO role as of August 3rd to take a great opportunity with GeoAnalytics. It has been great working with you over the past two years to improve the GIS landscape within the state of Wisconsin. I appreciate all the support you have provided me in this role and hope we can continue to work together on our efforts to improve overall coordination of statewide GIS efforts.

DOA is committed to supporting the enterprise GIS program and will be working on filling the GIO position as soon as possible. It is our responsibility to ensure success of the statewide GIS program by continuing to raise awareness and educate our constituencies on the importance of GIS coordination and the implementation of the statewide strategic plan initiatives.

Thank you again for your support.
