Sharing GIS Resources
What are the possibilities for sharing GIS and making it more affordable for small communities?
In Maine, there is talk about sharing hosting services .
In Iowa, there is a GIS Coordinator that services two Counties.
Would Wis.'s smaller communities can benefit by sharing resources with other communities? Many counties and municipalities have done it with data collection. Are maintenance and coordianation duties not far behind?

In Iowa, we're faced with a lot of the similar rural issues that are faced all around the Midwest and the discussions related to potentially sharing resources creeps up more and more often.
Its kind of an interesting situation in Iowa when it comes to county GIS coordination issues. We have had in the past other situations where county positions are shared. Actually, there was a GIS Coordinator who was a shared position between two counties in NE Iowa but that didn't completely work out over the long run and the individual went back to coordinating for one county. The other situation that you're linking to in Iowa is my wife so I've heard first hand the trials and tribulations with getting something off the ground. There is potential there that has to be looked at given the economics of the rural Midwest and the expenses associated with geospatial technologies.
